Thanks to one of our WCU students in the campaign team we were given a table at this year’s International Festival at Western Carolina University to promote both the Website and the Go Fund Me Campaign for the upcoming Run/Bike Promotional Tour.  They hold this event every year and there is a table for different countries represented by the international students in attendance at WCU.  They have food, drinks, art, traditional dress, and crafts available for Festival goers to look at, and quite often, buy.  There are also vendors with local and international cuisine as well as some craft booths.

It was an beautiful sunny day with lots of people, good music from all over the world (including a live bagpipe performance), and tasty treats.  We put together a brief video to give you a glimpse of the day.  Check it out…

Where to begin?  An apology is in order, so I will start there.  I am sorry that so much time lapses between posts.  Consistency is something that all good business and life coaches repeat over and over.  I get it, I do.  There has been so much going on that Clarke and I have been leaving things unfinished each night and falling into bed around 11pm each night.  And to be quite honest with myself and all of you – consistency is definitely something I am still working on, lol.

So what have we been doing, you ask?  Still working on the Run Map and getting ready for our first meeting with the new teams from WCU this semester, of course!

The Run is coming along.  Slower than I had first expected it to, but not without progress.  So far, I have mapped our tentative stops from Highlands, North Carolina, to Palisades Park, NJ.  I haven’t cemented our stops yet, but I do have ideas and possible places to rest at the end of each day.  We even found a few interesting things along the route that we may have to stop and take a look at.  Did you know there are Ghost Bicycle memorials along the highways in some places?  There are bikes painted entirely white and positioned near roads where a cyclist was killed.  There is one not to far from our route as we pass through Pennsylvania.  You can read more about it here GhostBikes.org and see a list of ghost bike 1the current locations around the world along with the names of those they were erected for.  Sobering thought, considering Clarke will be biking every other day.

We will definitely be keeping safety in mind while Clarke is out.  We want him very visible for more reasons than just getting the word out about World Tree Circle! 🙂

We have also finished gathering our initial “info packets” for the WCU students to help us get off to a very smooth start this semester.  Things like passwords, what the last group accomplished, and so on.  We will be working with 2 teams, 3 students each.  Clarke and I like to meet with the students at least once a week to share what we have all been accomplishing and what the goals are for the upcoming week.  It makes it much easier to address any challenges that come up right away and helps us all stay on the right track.  Since these meetings can be jammed packed with news from everyone we will need to meet with our teams separately most of the time to maximize all our time.  We will meet as a whole company now and again to make sure we are all staying true to the business model that we have in mind for World Tree, but not every week.  Our student are only required to spend about 6 hours a week working on this project and we want them to spend as much of that as possible on the tasks at hand.

Needless to say, we are looking forward to meeting all these new professionals and the extra help and creativity they will bring to the table.  If you can bear with me and check back now and again you will see regular updates on how things are progressing.  This semester I will be asking our students to give us at least one blog post with their experience working on this site and the run crowd funding, if not regular posts on what they are up to along the way.

Also – we will be adding Clarke’s PICTURES ON THE RUN photos to the WTC Store in the coming weeks.  We will be making them available at the best prices we can – an all proceeds will go towards funding the upcoming run and the creation of WorldTreeCircle.com’s online community.  So, keep your eye out for those and feel free to purchase as many as you like!  Here are some of the photos you can expect to see for sale….

Beautiful and Inspiring Words Given to Us…I Just Had to Share.

World Tree Circle is the place that people turn to where products, businesses, and ideas whose goal it is to solve intractable problems, heal the earth, and share knowledge for the benefit of all are found.

Youre-Not-Alone

Such beautiful words.  I can’t lay claim to them.  These are thanks to a World Tree Circle supporter like you.  Clarke’s dad, in fact.  From Clarke’s passionate explanation and defense of our pursuits to create this website, Mick has seen the picture described in his own words above.  World Tree Circle will be that, and so much more.  Our imagination is the limit.  It will be a simple social network for some.  For others it will be a tool.  And for those intrepid souls with limitless imaginations and faith it will be a place to gather with their fellow man and create a new world where we are all equal and beautiful.  Where we can solve the unsolvable and learn how to be…more.

In the words of Shakespeare, “We are such stuff as dreams are made on.”

We’re finally ready to show you what we have to so far.  Christian, Pat, Vin and Nadja worked hard over the last semester on how best to create this site for us all through surveys, focus groups, and lots of research.  Below is a screenshot of the foundation for the site that Christian and Pat turned over to us on Thursday.  There is still lots of work to do but now it is ready for all of you creative and giving Open Source designers to jump in and play!  It is being created on GitHub so you can look it up and see what we have so far.  We would love to see all your suggestions and comments and will be keeping an eye out for your Pull Requests.

Western Carolina University’s Final Presentation

What a day!  We were scheduled to be “on” at 10am this morning but due to a little snaffoo, our group presented at 10:30a instead.  We thought we had everything ready.  T-shirts for the team were done and bagged up ready to go.  We got to bed and were able to get a decent nights sleep, despite our excitement.  Even got out the door at a better than usual time.

Then we realized we left the shirts on the chair by the phone – back at the house.  We would have been doing okay, but there was a sweet English Staffordshire Terrier mama in the road on our way home that just wouldn’t get out of the road and stay there.  We couldn’t leave her there to get killed.  So, despite already running almost 10 minutes behind for a presentation that would last approximately 15 minutes, we tucked her into the car where she gratefully settled in and took her home to keep her safe until we could contact her owner with the number on her collar.

Dr. Yue Hillon was wonderful.  She let our group hold off and put another group up in our slot so that we wouldn’t miss our team present.  I’d like to say it went off without a hitch.  I’d be lying.  However, it was a very small hitch (not counting being 15 minutes late, of course).  Part of the powerpoint presentation didn’t load but Christian barely missed a bit with his speech and they all kept smiling and moving confidently forward.  It was great.

During the question portion there were great comments and shows of support and interest from the other business owners present.  It was exhilarating as well as enlightening.  we stayed after for a bit talking with the team about how we would implement many of their recommendations and received several offers for further help.  We will continue to work closely with Western Carolina University through their internship program as well as future ventures with the the Business College’s capstone projects whenever we can.  Dr. Hillon has been a tremendous help and would like to continue to do so going forward. So look to hear more of our great adventures with WCU, SBTDC, and Yue Hillon and Wendy Cagle in the future.

Oh the Anticipation!

It feels like Christmas Eve a bit tonight at the World Tree Circle Headquarters.  Tomorrow is the day that the Western Carolina University Business College students will present all their hard work to the businesses that they have been teamed up with over the last semester.  We have been working pretty closely with our team, meeting once a week whenever possible.  We got lots of great ideas and the the bones of what will become World    Tree    Circle.  True, it will be the bare bones.  These students had a short amount of time to work on what will be a very dynamic site.  But it is real now.  Not just a concept in our heads, or even a mock-up on paper. Tomorrow our students will present that in front of other businesses and their fellow graduates.  How exciting is that?  The closest I can come to describing it is that feeling we had as kids in the wee hours before Christmas when we could finally get out of bed and run to the tree.  Anyone else know that feeling?  Do you have a holiday or occasion that elicits a similar feeling?  We’d love to hear about it!

We’d like to give a huge thank you to Patrick Ballance, Christian Crawford, Nadja Heller, and Vin Pratt  for all the support, ideas, and help you have given us.  It was a true pleasure.

We’ll be sure to share all the new stuff we get in the presentation tomorrow as soon as we can.

Behind every great open source website is the people who contributed to its creation and support crew. This site will be no different. Our goal is to create a site that will fit practically anyone and is enjoyable to use because it does what you want it to as a result of you having a say in the layout and design. That will be a work in progress of course, but will be a quickly evolving product the more and more people who contribute their ideas and suggestions. We’re calling for all your help now, at the very start, to be a part of the force that creates the spark of life that is World Tree Circle. In all the websites you use, what are the characteristics of each that you really love – and really can’t stand, about them?

The Run Map Now Live – Check it Out!

We’ve been having a bit of a challenge finding a mapping program that would allow us to map out the run/bike route while showing what countries we would visit.  the number of location per layer seemed to be the sticking point.  We even upgraded to Google Maps Pro but haven’t been totally successful.  Still not sure if its the program or the user. :/  However, diligence has paid off some what and we do have a pretty decent map to share with everyone so far.  There are 3 routes, each in 2 sections (due to the limit of locations per layer).  One is for the run route, one for the bike route and one for the driving route the kids, critters and I will have to take to keep up.

In preparation for a crowd-funding campaign to raise money for the run next summer, as well as the other expenses of building a site like this, we have decided to put together some short videos on YouTube.  Some are pretty rough and some aren’t bad, or at least won’t be after some more advanced editing.  The idea is to make World Tree Circle’s goals and plans as transparent as possible while showing that we’re your average family.  No special skills, tricks or great funds – just a really great idea that we are passionate about making a reality to benefit all of us so we’re doing all we can to make it happen.
