Gearing Up!

Since we began this endeavor in 2013 we have made progress in leaps and bounds.  Despite being a team of 2 on and off.  2014 was full of “leaps” for World Tree Circle.  We teamed up with Western Carolina University’s Business College.  We have been able to interact with up-and-coming individuals in their field, helping us to gain new perspectives.  We now have the foundation for the actual community site.  As well as having built a fast growing group of followers on 3 different social media sites – most, if not all, of which are not duplicated from those 3 communities!western carolina univ logo

So it is with great pleasure we can announce that in this new year, we will continue to make great advances.  We will be teaming with WCU again this semester and will be assigned two teams.  One for the fundraising (most likely IndieGoGo or Kickstarter) and the other to focus entirely on the development of the site where our last student team left off.  This is extremely exciting.  I for one have very high hopes for this semester’s students.  We learned a lot from our last joint effort and will be able to improve on much this semester.

Also, along with defining exactly how much money we need to build World Tree Circle and fund the run, we are working on getting the run mapped out and deciding on the schedule for stops to meet new people along the way.  Our tentative date to head out from Highlands, NC, is June 14th.  We will have to keep up a pretty vigorous pace, but the goal is to be back in Franklin, NC, on August 10, 2015.  That will give our kiddos some time to unwind and get ready for the upcoming school year to start.  Considering all the places they will see, the new people they will have met, and the amazing things those people will have shared – we will all need at least that much time to sort of assimilate all we have experienced.

communicating across culturesWe will be doing intensive research on functions and places steeped in the cultures we have picked for this trip.  We want to get the best examples we can find here in the States.  If you know of something, or someone, we should be sure not to miss, please let us know.  Send us a quick note or email at info@worldtreecircle.com.

Here’s to Great things in the New Year!

Beautiful and Inspiring Words Given to Us…I Just Had to Share.

World Tree Circle is the place that people turn to where products, businesses, and ideas whose goal it is to solve intractable problems, heal the earth, and share knowledge for the benefit of all are found.

Youre-Not-Alone

Such beautiful words.  I can’t lay claim to them.  These are thanks to a World Tree Circle supporter like you.  Clarke’s dad, in fact.  From Clarke’s passionate explanation and defense of our pursuits to create this website, Mick has seen the picture described in his own words above.  World Tree Circle will be that, and so much more.  Our imagination is the limit.  It will be a simple social network for some.  For others it will be a tool.  And for those intrepid souls with limitless imaginations and faith it will be a place to gather with their fellow man and create a new world where we are all equal and beautiful.  Where we can solve the unsolvable and learn how to be…more.

In the words of Shakespeare, “We are such stuff as dreams are made on.”

pee safelyWe’ve been so preoccupied of late with the more technical aspects of World Tree Circle that I’ve noticed less of a personal touch to the blog posts.  Sorry about that! 🙂

WTC is all about the web being a tool for us to get closer and connect on a personal level.  So its only right that we start with the blog.  What about some little articles about topics you might see Sun Rays for?

Funny as it sounds, “Where to find a safe public restroom while traveling” is an example that has come up on more than one occasion.  Make’s sense though.  Don’t you think?  We’ll all find ourselves in that situation at one time or another.  Unless you never leave your house, of course.

It doesn’t even have to be when you are somewhere on the other side of the world.  I mean, what if you’re across town and don’t know the area well?  You see my point?

No question is stupid.  Or so the saying goes.  We all have our quirky curious to satisfy.  Whether its where to find a safe public lou or whether frog legs taste like chicken or fish.  What questions would you like to ask?

Just a quick update for our followers.  We’ve met with our new team several times now and have a game plan that will be going in to action soon.  What have we been up to?  Here’s what we’ve got going on:

  • Planning a Focus Group study for next week.  We will be meeting with 5-10 WCU international students to talk about social media and there likes and dislikes over yummy food and good company.
  • Finalizing our online survey that will go out to the entire student body at WCU.  This 10 question survey will help us get a stronger handle on what people are looking for in their social media.
  • Our computer team, Christian and Pat, have started  to create the foundation for the website.  Soooooo exciting!!!!!!!
  • In the “design stage” of creating a new short video to talk about WTC that we will use on a crowd funding site called Indiegogo as well as our site and other online advertising.

And check out “Pictures on the Run” on our Google+, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages to see what Clarke has been up to during his runs to train for next summers epic run!

hard at work

So I owe an apology to our followers.  I haven’t posted anything recently and I apologize for the lapse.  I have been giving my spare time to updating our business plan.

Wendy Cagle (at WCU) gave us their Business Plan outline to use and I have been trying to pull the still useful information from our old business plan to the new one plus add the new information that is missing.  Simple right?  I thought so but now I’m feeling a little overwhelmed.  It isn’t that the concept is terribly difficult.  More that the information it calls for is not as cut and dry in our case.  There are lots of social networks to gather some data from but each has it’s “specialty” where WTC will try to incorporate them all with better translation software and through open source technology.

There are no other open sourced social network sites that I have found to date.  Without other sites to compare to or pull financial histories on, I have to create the budget and projections almost from scratch.  I can use bits and pieces from what I find for each of the specialized sites.  It seems like guess-work at best for some things.  We know what the hosting is costing us now, what our domain names cost, etc.,  but we have to know how many servers we think we’ll need, the cost of maintaining them, how many people to run everything and what their salaries will be, an so on.

We know this is a worthwhile project and can describe what we think it could look like (to an extent) and what we want it to do for our users.  However, we don’t know what creating the site entails, not really.  So I am working on the parts I know I can fill out and then will start attending Meet Ups in our area to learn more about the areas that we are lacking in.  If you know of any groups that would allow me to join them and listen to their discussion, maybe even ask some questions, please let me know!

I can’t wait to see a social network that is controlled by the say of the users. This will set World Tree apart from the others. Giving you a chance to voice ideas openly to create an environment of free information exchange. Opening the opportunity to have some control over your networking site. hand tree
